Submission Guidelines for Studies in Medieval English Language and Literature (SIMELL)

 1. All articles, reviews (long and short) or research notes (hereafter comprehensively referred to as “submissions”) must contribute to the study of medieval English language and literature and related fields. They should not have been already published elsewhere. If the submission has been already presented orally, please indicate where and when.
2. The submission should be accompanied by a separate opening page that gives a brief biography of the author, her/his affiliation, address, telephone number, e-mail address, etc. Any information that might reveal the identity of the author, such as name, acknowledgments, details of oral presentations, etc. should not be included in the article. Because SIMELL has adopted a double-blind reviewing process, no personal details will be provided to the reviewers.
3. Submissions can be in either Japanese or English. Submissions in Japanese should have English titles. It is the responsibility of the author to have the manuscript proofread for style and grammatical accuracy before submission.
4. Submissions in Japanese should be about 12,000 characters, while those in English should be about 7,000 words. Reviews in Japanese should be about 4,000 characters, those in English about 2,000 words. In the case of research notes in English, the maximum length should be about 2,000 words. In proposals for a symposium, the total length should be approximately 27,000 characters, if in Japanese; if in English, approximately 16,000 words.
5. The manuscript should be submitted as a Word or PDF file. If it contains any special characters or symbols, please identify them as such and explain their function briefly. For other formatting details, follow the latest edition of The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. The submission must be a finished document, complete with endnotes.
6. Submissions will not be returned.
7. The deadline for submission is August 31.
8. Proofreading by the author will be limited to the first draft, and then only to correct typographical errors.
9. 30 copies of any published submission will be made available to the author.
10. All articles, reviews and research notes will be made public by J-STAGE (an online platform for Japanese academic journals), accessible through the link of the Society’s homepage in September of the second year following publication. The copyright of all articles, reviews and research notes belongs to the Society.
