演題：”Reconciling Linguistics and Philology: Current Trends in Historical English Language”

ABSTRACT: What is the discipline known as “English Language”? In this paper,　I describe the place of English Language in relation to the wider field “English Studies”. I attempt to demonstrate current trends in the subject through three case-studies: grammaticalisation and the verb phrase from Old to Present-Day English; Chaucer’s metre; and the vocabulary of Shakespeare. My theme is that the reconciliation of linguistics and philology has revolutionised English Language as a distinct discipline.
